I recently had some photos and my film 'Porphyria' exhibited at Brunswick Street Gallery in Melbourne. I had two photographs from my Tin City series and a photo from Mexico in their 2011 Small Works Prize, whilst my film was screening in their video area from 17th June to 29th June 2011.

My Ya'ni series of photographs from Syria last year have been featured on the home page of the Focus Project 2011 with the curator stating "In her series Ya’ni, Jade Cantwell seizes the moments between moments to show an unspeakably beautiful side of Syria during her travels."

If you're quick you might catch it on the home page here or you can also have a sneaky peak here. Many thanks to the Focus Project!

Beate featured in Architect Victoria Magazine

We were fortunate enough to be featured in the current edition of Architect Victoria Magazine. We submitted a little collage and writing combo to their MANIFESTO edition that features a range of studios and firms from Victoria.

Keep scrolling down for some images, or you can even view an online version here.

Our collage is a combination of our extremely varied and diverse interests - everything from Ottoman architecture to the films of Alejandro Jodorowsky and Errol Morris, there's even a little bit of male pattern baldness thrown in for good measure. Our manifesto reads as follows:

"We had reached a peak in our photocopying skills.

Beate Adfectus is the brainchild of three worn-down and disillusioned 20-somethings; tired of shitty hospitality jobs, unpaid internships and 'learning the ropes'. These three renegades set out to break down walls between design, film, fashion, photography, architecture and new media to create new hybrid works that excite the senses and the imagination.

We're not ashamed to admit our ambition is to be the most sublime fools ever sent rambling. We have an absolute addiction to craziness and folly and hysteria. Through the delirium come stories, of how we see the world.

+ this is not limited to how we see the world through architecture. Architecture is a tool through which we understand ourselves, as well as the world around us. Forces that make up our built environment are no longer restricted to bricks and mortar. Augmented space, images, data scapes and our new intangible identities are constantly reformatting the way we interact with the world beyond our own skin.

Undoubtedly, there are irresistible opportunities to be taken from a cross disciplinary collaboration. All that we hope is that these mongrel ideas that we birth into the world take hold, interact and possibly, just maybe, inspire."

Photography featured on Holy Ghost online

The people over at Holy Ghost Zine have been nice enough to feature some of my photos on their website/blog.

The photos are from a series I have been working on called 'Marking the way' which searches for those signs, symbols and remnants of human activity that mark the journeys and stories which habitate our surroundings. Worn grass paths, rock markers and cryptic symbols that signify moments in our evolution and communication on a subconscious level.

Have a look here.
